Behind Shaniwar Wada / Budhwar Chowk
Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati
श्रीमंत भाऊसाहेब रंगारी गणपती
The mandal at the centre of the argument about who first took Ganeshotsav out of the private house in Pune. A festival installation, with a museum-like memory of 1892 in the news accounts.
History
- The Hindu reports that public Ganeshotsav took root in 1892 at the house of Bhau Lakshman Javale, a royal physician and dyer of Maharashtrian sarees, in a two-storey home behind Shaniwar Wada. It says three Ganpatis were installed that year: at Bhau Rangari’s house, at Ganpatrao Ghotavdekar’s, and at Sardar Nanasaheb Khasgiwale’s, ending on Anant Chaturdashi. It says Tilak wrote about the householder’s idea in Kesari on 26 September 1893 and installed his own Ganpati in 1894. The Hindu
- The Indian Express reports the trust’s claim of an 1892 community festival, and a city historian’s view that the public celebration by Rangari, Khasgiwale, and Ghotavdekar was in 1893, not 1892. BBC News Marathi sets the trust’s descendant against historian Mandar Lawate in the same way: 1892 versus 1893, with Tilak’s idol at Vinchurkar Wada in 1894. The Indian Express · BBC News Marathi
Why it matters
- Hindustan Times says the idol shows Ganesha killing a demon, the demon standing for British rule, and that from the first year the Rangari Ganpati came third from last in the procession, in a wooden chariot. It places the celebration near Budhwar Chowk. Hindustan Times
Location
- Two news descriptions are both in the record: The Hindu says the house was behind Shaniwar Wada; Hindustan Times says the trust celebrates near Budhwar Chowk. They are a short walk apart in the old city, but this guide does not merge them into one door number. The Hindu · Hindustan Times
