Kesari Wada (Gaikwad Wada)
Kesari Wada Ganpati
केसरी वाडा गणपती
Fifth in today’s Manache order, and the mandal tied to Lokmanya Tilak. The wada it uses now is not the house where every historian says the first Tilak installation happened.
History
- Hindustan Times says Tilak founded the mandal, that it follows the Tilak Panchang, and that it emphasises cultural and educational programmes rather than decoration. It says the festival was earlier at Vinchurkar Wada and shifted in 1902 to Gaikwad Wada, also called Kesari Wada. Hindustan Times
- The Kasba mandal’s about page says Tilak began the public festival at his home in Kesari Wada in 1893. The Hindu says Tilak noted Bhau Rangari’s 1892 celebration in a Kesari editorial on 26 September 1893, and installed a Ganpati at his own residence in 1894. BBC News Marathi reports historian Mandar Lawate’s view that the public festival’s recorded start is 1893, and that Tilak installed an idol at Vinchurkar Wada in 1894.
