Kasba Ganpati — official mandal photograph

Pune · 2026

Ganeshotsav in Pune is not a checklist. It is a city opening its doors.

Dagdusheth at 4–7am

The photo everyone wants. Go before the city is awake, or lose the afternoon.

Skip Tuesday night

Also Day 1, weekends, and visarjan eve at the biggest mandals. Mornings are the real flex.

The five are a walk

About 40 minutes of walking if lanes are kind. Crowds, not distance, will decide your time.

The honoured five

Manache Ganpati — walk them in this order

On foot from Kasba Peth. About 36 minutes of walking if lanes are kind. Tick as you go — it stays on this phone. This year’s darshan is on each mandal’s official page — we do not use generated idols.

  1. 1. Kasba → 10m
  2. 2. Tambdi → 8m
  3. 3. Guruji → 6m
  4. 4. Tulshibaug → 12m
  5. 5. Kesari

1st · Manacha Pahila

Kasba Ganpati

Kasba Peth, near Shaniwar Wada

Pune’s gramdaivat — the city’s own Ganpati. No visarjan procession begins until this one leads. Oldest of the honoured five; tied to Jijabai and young Shivaji.

Start here at dawn. The lanes are still waking up, and you will understand why Punekars treat this as home, not a spectacle.

2nd · Manacha Dusra

Tambdi Jogeshwari

Budhwar Peth

Second in ceremonial honour. Compact, deeply local, and easy to miss if you only chase the biggest idol photos.

Walk it as part of the five — do not skip it just because it is smaller than Dagdusheth.

3rd · Manacha Tisra

Guruji Talim

Ganesh Peth

Among the earliest public mandals. Quiet prestige, wrestling-akhada roots, old-city character.

Look at how people greet this mandal — respect here is about history, not height of the murti.

4th · Manacha Chautha

Tulshibaug Ganpati

Tulshibaug market

Tall, heavily ornamented, sitting inside Pune’s densest shopping maze. First fibreglass idol in the city (1975).

Combine darshan with the market: bangles, puja items, festival clothes. Evenings are a crush — mornings are kinder.

5th · Manacha Pachva

Kesari Wada Ganpati

Narayan Peth · Tilak’s Kesari Wada

Lokmanya Tilak’s home ground. This is where public Ganeshotsav as a people’s movement still feels close.

Read a line about Tilak before you go. The idol makes more sense when you know why the festival left the courtyard and entered the street.

Then these — if you have the legs

The one everyone has seen in photos

Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai

Budhwar Peth

Not one of the Manache five — and still the city’s most visited Ganpati. Gold, scale, celebrity aartis, and queues that can eat your afternoon.

Best: 4–7am, or weekday mid-festival mornings. Avoid: Day 1, weekends, Tuesdays, visarjan.

Pune’s first public mandal

Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari

Shukrawar Peth

Paper-mâché and sawdust idol of Ganpati slaying a demon — the demon read as colonial power. The original stays; a small murti is immersed. Bullock-drawn wooden chariot on visarjan.

Go for the story, not the LED show. This is Pune’s political memory in one idol.

Decoration mandal

Hutatma Babu Genu

Laxmi Road / old city

Named for a freedom-struggle martyr. Famous for ambitious pandal themes and temple-replica sets.

Evenings, if you want spectacle. Pair with a slow walk on Laxmi Road.

Market heart

Akhil Mandai · Sharada Ganesh

Mahatma Phule Mandai

Ganpati with Devi Sharada, in the city’s great vegetable market. Smell of coriander, marigold, and wet stone.

Morning market energy is the point. Eat something fried nearby after.

Light-and-sound

Natu Baug & Chimnya Ganpati

Bajirao Road · Sadashiv Peth

Musical lighting, crowd theatre, the ‘wow’ nights of the festival.

One evening is enough. Do not try to stack this with a 5am Manache walk the same night.

Must · prasad of the festival

Ukadiche modak

Steamed rice-flour pockets, coconut-jaggery heart. Eat them hot. This is not the fried modak of gift boxes — this is the real thing.

Poona Guest House, Kaka Halwai, Chitale Bandhu, Hotel Shreyas, Puranpoli Ghar

Breakfast with heat

Puneri misal

Sprouted beans, fiery tarri, farsan, pav. Ask for ‘less spicy’ if you need to; nobody will be offended. Carry a handkerchief.

Bedekar Tea Stall (Narayan Peth), Katakir, Vaidya Upahar Gruha

Afternoon cool-down

Mastani

Thicker than a milkshake, ice cream on top. Mango in season, sitaphal if you see it. You will need this after old-city walking.

Sujata Mastani and classic spots on FC / JM / Laxmi Road

Festival sweet

Puran poli

Chana-dal and jaggery stuffed roti, ghee. This is how Pune tastes in September.

Puranpoli Ghar, sweet shops around Tulshibaug and Laxmi Road

Cheap, fast, local

Pohe & kachori

Start the Kasba walk with pohe. Do not hunt only for Instagram cafes in KP — the peths feed you better during these days.

Sudamache Pohe, Gajanan Kachori, Gaurav Snacks near Dagdusheth

Carry home

Bhakarwadi & chivda

If you take one edible souvenir, make it this. Skip overpriced ‘gift hampers’ near the temple queue.

What to keep in mind

How not to waste the trip

Pune is not Mumbai’s festival

Do not open with ‘but Lalbaugcha Raja…’. The point here is the order, the history, and the Manache five. Huge idols exist here too — they are not the point.

Leave the car

Old-city roads close, flip one-way, or simply stop moving. A 2 km drive can lose to a walk. Metro + PMPML + feet. Park once, far from the peths. 2026 diversions will be issued by Pune Police — last year’s map is already wrong.

Go at 5am, not 8pm — if you want darshan

Nights are for lights, drums, and people-watching. Mornings are for actually seeing the idol. Dagdusheth at 4–6am is a different planet from Dagdusheth at 9pm.

Shoes, water, tiny bag

You will walk more than you think, often on uneven peth lanes. Comfortable closed shoes. Bottle. No suitcase backpacks in queues — they annoy everyone and make you a pickpocket target.

Temple manners

Remove footwear where asked. Do not cut the queue. Do not film aarti in someone’s face. Do not step on rangoli. Accept prasad with your right hand. A simple ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’ is enough.

Stay slightly outside the crush

Sleeping in the peths sounds romantic until the dhol starts at night and the street is a river of people. Koregaon Park, Deccan, Shivajinagar, or anywhere on Metro with a 20-minute ride in is often smarter.

September weather

It can still rain. Carry a compact umbrella, not a raincoat you will hate in a crowd. Light cotton. Mosquitoes in older neighbourhoods after dusk.

Money and phones

UPI works almost everywhere, but tiny pohe stalls still like cash. Keep a power bank. In visarjan density, hold your phone like it is your passport.

Women and late nights

Daytime old city is full of families. Late visarjan and isolated lanes after midnight are a different texture — go in a group, share live location, agree a meeting point if you split.

Don’t treat mandals like sets

These are neighbourhoods running on volunteer labour. Buy from the stall in front of the mandal. Thank the people managing shoes. If a volunteer asks you to move, move.

Pocket kit

Broken-in walking shoes

Small crossbody / waist pouch

1L bottle + ORS sachet

Power bank + short cable

Cash in 100s and 50s

Folding umbrella

Light cotton layers

Earplugs (visarjan / dhol)

Photocopy of ID, not a file of originals

A little patience. It is the real ticket.
